Part 1: Religious Belief Systems

     That Can Cause Harm

1. Legalism

Definition:
An overemphasis on rules and regulations as a way to earn God’s favour rather than trusting in His grace.

Damage Caused:

  • Produces guilt and shame instead of freedom and grace.
  • Leads to judgmental attitudes and hypocrisy.
  • Distorts the gospel message (Galatians 3:1–3).

Key Scripture:
Galatians 3:1-3 — Paul warns against relying on the law instead of faith in Christ.

2. Prosperity Gospel

Definition:
The belief that faith automatically guarantees wealth and good health.

Damage Caused:

  • Encourages materialism and unrealistic expectations.
  • Blames individuals for their suffering, implying lack of faith.
  • Overlooks the reality of suffering and the call to carry the cross (Philippians 1:29).

Key Scripture:
Philippians 1:29 — Suffering for Christ is part of the Christian journey.

3. Religious Extremism

Definition:
When religious beliefs become radicalised and justify violence or hatred.

Damage Caused:

  • Justifies terrorism, persecution, and hatred in God’s name.
  • Contradicts Jesus’ teaching of love and forgiveness (Luke 6:27–29).
  • Harms the reputation of faith in the wider society.

Key Scripture:
Luke 6:27-29 — Jesus teaches love for enemies and non-retaliation.

4. Authoritarian Spiritual Leadership

Definition:
A controlling leadership style demanding unquestioning obedience.

Damage Caused:

  • Leads to spiritual abuse and manipulation.
  • Suppresses individual conscience and personal growth.
  • Contradicts Jesus’ model of servant leadership (Mark 10:42–45).

Key Scripture:
Mark 10:42-45 — Jesus models leadership as service, not domination.

5. Works-Based Salvation

Definition:
The belief that salvation is earned by good deeds instead of by grace through faith.

Damage Caused:

  • Undermines Christ’s finished work on the cross (Ephesians 2:8–9).
  • Leaves believers insecure about their salvation status.
  • Encourages pride or despair depending on performance.

Key Scripture:
Ephesians 2:8-9 — Salvation is a gift, not earned by works.

6. Exclusivistic Sectarianism

Definition:
Claiming one’s church or denomination is the only true way to God.

Damage Caused:

  • Creates division and spiritual elitism.
  • Isolates believers from wider Christian community.
  • Discourages genuine faith exploration.

Part 2: Personal Limiting Belief Systems

1. “I’m Not Good Enough”

Root Causes: Shame, rejection, or past failures.

Impact:

  • Blocks trust in God’s grace (Romans 8:1).
  • Prevents stepping into God’s calling.
  • Fuels insecurity and unhealthy comparison.

Key Scripture:
Romans 8:1 — There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.

2. “God Only Loves Me When I Do Everything Right”

Root Causes: Performance-based religion or upbringing.

Impact:

  • Undermines assurance of God’s unconditional love (1 John 4:18–19).
  • Causes fear and spiritual burnout.
  • Ignores the truth of grace.

Key Scripture:
1 John 4:18-19 — God’s love casts out fear; we love because He first loved us.

3. “I’ll Never Change”

Root Causes: Long-term struggles with sin or bad habits.

Impact:

  • Blocks faith in God’s power to transform (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • Encourages passivity and hopelessness.
  • Hinders spiritual and personal growth.

Key Scripture:
2 Corinthians 5:17 — Anyone in Christ is a new creation.

4. “I Have to Please Everyone”

Root Causes: Fear of rejection, people-pleasing tendencies.

Impact:

  • Leads to unhealthy compromises and weak boundaries.
  • Distracts from prioritising God’s approval (Galatians 1:10).
  • Causes anxiety and exhaustion.

Key Scripture:
Galatians 1:10–We cannot please everyone; we must seek to please God.

5. “I Don’t Have Anything Valuable to Offer”

Root Causes: Low self-worth or missed opportunities.

Impact:

  • Neglects spiritual gifts and calling (1 Peter 4:10).
  • Prevents participation in ministry and leadership.
  • Limits kingdom impact.

Key Scripture:
1 Peter 4:10 — Use your gifts to serve others faithfully.

6. “My Past Defines Me”

Root Causes: Regret, trauma, unforgiveness.

Impact:

  • Keeps a person stuck in false identity (Philippians 3:13–14).
  • Limits openness to God’s restoration.
  • Blocks healthy relationships and growth.

Key Scripture:
Philippians 3:13-14 — Forgetting the past, pressing forward to the goal.
