Introduction
Today, we delve into four core actions that help us live by the Word of God: coming to the Word, conceiving it in our hearts, confessing it with our mouths, and contending for it in our lives. By embodying these principles, we can grow in faith, deepen our relationship with God, and live out His will more fully.
I. Come to the Word
Scriptural Reference: James 1:21
To “come to the Word” is to approach the Bible with humility, openness, and a readiness to receive God’s guidance.
- Open Your Heart
James 1:21 (NIV) says, “Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” This verse reminds us that a humble, open heart allows God’s Word to take root. We are invited to let go of our own pride, our judgments, and anything that blocks the seed of God’s Word from taking hold. - Daily Engagement
Engaging with Scripture daily is essential. Psalm 119:105 (NIV) says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” In a world full of distractions and uncertainties, daily Scripture guides us, helps clarify our choices, and keeps us rooted in God’s truth. - Seek Understanding
Proverbs 2:6 (NIV) assures us, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” As we read, let’s also seek to understand—praying for wisdom to discern what God is saying and how it applies to our lives.
II. Conceive the Word
Scriptural Reference: Luke 8:15
To “conceive the Word” means to internalise it so deeply that it grows within us and bears fruit in our lives.
- Internalise the Message
Luke 8:15 (NIV) tells us, “But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” The Word must penetrate deeply into our hearts, becoming part of our very nature. We nurture it by pondering it and letting it shape our character. - Meditate on the Word
Joshua 1:8 (NIV) says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night.” Meditation brings the Word to life within us, moving it from our minds into our spirits and our everyday actions. - Transform Your Mind
Romans 12:2 (NIV) urges us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” When we internalise the Word, it renews and transforms our minds, changing the way we think, react, and engage with others.
III. Confess the Word
Scriptural Reference: Romans 10:9-10
Confessing the Word means declaring it aloud, both as a proclamation of faith and as a way to shape our lives.
- Declare Your Faith
Romans 10:9-10 (NIV) teaches, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Faith is not only a matter of belief but also of confession. By declaring our faith, we affirm it before God and others, strengthening our commitment. - Speak Life
Proverbs 18:21 (NIV) reminds us, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” We have the power to speak life or discouragement, hope or despair. When we speak God’s promises, we affirm His goodness in our lives and uplift those around us. - Encourage One Another
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV) encourages us, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together… but encouraging one another.” Confessing the Word isn’t just for personal encouragement but also a way to uplift our community, sharing God’s truths in love and support.
IV. Contend for the Word
Scriptural Reference: Jude 1:3
Finally, we are called to “contend for the Word” by standing firm in our faith, even in the face of adversity.
- Defend the Faith
Jude 1:3 (NIV) challenges us to “contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.” We must be prepared to defend our beliefs and stand up for the truth in a world that often resists it. This does not mean being confrontational but standing firm in love and respect. - Stand Firm in Trials
Ephesians 6:13 (NIV) encourages us, “Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground.” The Word equips us with resilience and spiritual strength to withstand life’s challenges. - Proclaim the Truth
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) instructs us, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” Contending for the Word includes sharing it boldly and respectfully, offering others the hope we have in Christ.
Conclusion
By coming to the Word with open hearts, conceiving it in our spirits, confessing it with our mouths, and contending for it in the world, we allow God’s truth to transform us and guide our lives. Let us commit to these practices daily, growing in faith and helping others to see God’s light in us. May we continue to draw closer to God, allowing His Word to shine through us.
