Living Under God’s Authority

Submission to God is absolute (Jas 4:7).

Submission in other arenas (government, family, church, work, one another) is real but qualified—always “in the Lord” (Eph 6:1; Acts 5:29).

Week 1 — Bowed Hearts: Submission to God (Absolute)

Primary texts: Jas 4:6–10; Rom 12:1–2; Prov 3:5–6; Lk 9:23

  • What it is
    • Yielding to God’s rule: repent, resist the devil, draw near (Jas 4:7–8).
    • A living sacrifice (Rom 12:1–2).
  • Why it’s good
    • God opposes the proud, gives grace to the humble (Jas 4:6).
  • How it looks
    • Daily surrender: Word, prayer, obedience (Lk 9:23).
    • Trust over control: “Lean not on your own understanding” (Prov 3:5–6).
  • Examples
    • Jesus in Gethsemane (Mt 26:39), Mary’s “Let it be” (Lk 1:38), Abraham and Isaac (Gen 22).
  • Applications
    • Name one area to submit this week; invite accountability.
  • Small-group Qs
    • Where do I resist God most? What would repentance look like?
  • Memory verse: Jas 4:7.

Week 2 — The Pattern: Jesus’ Glad Obedience

Primary texts: Phil 2:5–11; Jn 5:19; 6:38; Heb 5:7–9

  • Mindset of Christ
    • Humility → obedience → exaltation (Phil 2:5–11).
  • Shape of obedience
    • “Not my will…” (Mt 26:39), doing only what the Father does (Jn 5:19).
  • Gospel centre
    • He learned obedience and became the source of salvation (Heb 5:8–9).
  • Applications
    • Imitate Jesus in decision-making, timing, tone.
  • Illustration
    • A signed blank cheque handed to God.
  • Memory verse: Phil 2:5.

Week 3 — Citizens & Government: Honour with Limits (see week 9 study)

Primary texts: Rom 13:1–7; 1 Pet 2:13–17; Titus 3:1–2; Acts 5:29; Dan 3, 6; Jer 29:7; 1 Tim 2:1–2

  • God’s design
    • Government is God’s servant for good, restraining evil (Rom 13:3–4).
    • Do good, pay taxes, show respect (Rom 13:6–7; 1 Pet 2:13–17).
  • Clear limits
    • When commanded to sin or forbidden to obey God: “We must obey God rather than people” (Acts 5:29).
    • Civil disobedience done respectfully: Hebrew youths (Dan 3), Daniel (Dan 6).
  • Our posture in Australia
    • Pray for leaders (1 Tim 2:1–2), contribute to the common good (Jer 29:7), engage lawfully, speak with gentleness.

    • Husbands: sacrificial love like Christ, nourishing and cherishing (Eph 5:25–29).
  • Gospel picture
    • Marriage mirrors Christ and the church (Eph 5:32).
  • Crucial safeguards
    • Submission never includes sin or enduring abuse. Seek help; the church must protect the vulnerable; obey the law (Ps 11:5; Rom 13:4).

  • Community practices
    • Foot-washing spirit; peacemaking; deferring on preferences to protect unity (Rom 12:10; Jn 13:14–15).
  • Example
    • Jerusalem Council—mutual listening, shared solution (Acts 15).
  • Applications
    • Choose unity over style wars; confess quickly; share leadership.
  • Memory verse: Phil 2:3–4.

Week 9 – When Obedience to God Conflicts with People

Primary Texts: Dan 3; Dan 6; Acts 4–5; Ex 1:15–21; Rev 13; plus Rom 13:1–7; 1 Pet 2:13–17; Acts 5:29

1) The Rule & the Limit

  • God’s good order: Government restrains evil and rewards good (Rom 13:3–4).
  • The limit line: If compliance = sin, Christians must refuse—politely but firmly (Acts 4:18–20; 5:29).
  • Conscience shaped by Scripture: Not mere preference, but clear biblical conviction (Rom 14:23; Acts 24:16).

2) When Resistance is Right (Biblical Categories)

  • Idolatry requiredRefuse (Dan 3:15–18; Rev 13:15).
  • Prayer/obedience to God forbiddenContinue obeying God (Dan 6:7–10).
  • Gospel witness silencedKeep speaking (Acts 4:18–20; 5:27–32).
  • Unjust harm to the vulnerableFear God, protect life (Ex 1:17–21; Prov 24:11–12).

3) How to Resist (A Godly Process)

  • (a) Examine: Is this clearly sin to comply, or sin to be silent? Search Scripture; seek wise counsel (Prov 15:22).
  • (b) Appeal: Use lawful channels first—appeals, exemptions, mediation (Acts 25:11).
  • (c) Refuse respectfully: State your reason with gentleness and clarity (1 Pet 3:15–16).
  • (d) Accept consequences: Entrust yourself to God; endure without bitterness (1 Pet 2:21–23).
  • (e) Keep doing good: Let your conduct shame false accusations (1 Pet 2:12).

Decision flow (simple):
Can I obey God and comply? → Comply.
Would compliance require sin or silence about Christ? → Respectfully refuse.
Is the command unclear? → Seek counsel, clarify, appeal; then act in faith (Rom 14:23).

4) Case Studies (Brief Exposition)

  • Dan 3 – The Furnace:
    • Issue: Worship the image or burn.
    • Response: “Even if He does not…” faithful courage without insult (Dan 3:16–18).
    • Result: God’s presence in the fire; public witness.
  • Dan 6 – The Lions’ Den:
    • Issue: 30-day prayer ban.
    • Response: Daniel keeps praying as usual (Dan 6:10)—no tantrum, just faithfulness.
    • Result: Vindication; king glorifies God.
  • Acts 4–5 – Apostolic Witness:
    • Issue: Do not preach in Jesus’ name.
    • Response: “We cannot help speaking…”; civil yet immovable (Acts 4:20; 5:29).
    • Result: Beatings endured; church purified and emboldened.
  • Ex 1 – Hebrew Midwives:
    • Issue: State-mandated killing.
    • Response: Fear God, protect life; careful speech (Ex 1:17–21).
    • Result: God’s favour and growth of His people.
  • Rev 13 – Beastly Power:
    • Issue: Totalising state/idolatrous economy.
    • Response: Patient endurance and faithfulness (Rev 13:10; 14:12).

5) Guardrails & Pitfalls

  • No cloak for sin: Don’t baptise stubbornness or lawlessness as “conscience.”
  • Not about comfort: Inconvenience ≠ persecution. The line is sin vs obedience.
  • Protection of the vulnerable: If harm/abuse is present, seek help immediately; involve police/authorities (Rom 13:4).
  • Plural wisdom: Involve elders, mature believers, and legal advice when appropriate (Acts 15:6; Prov 11:14).
