“Being R.E.A.L. in the Community”

Being R.E.A.L. in the Community

Introduction – Why R.E.A.L. Matters

God has called His people not to live in isolation but to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13–16).
To do this effectively, we must be R.E.A.L.Relevant, Engaging, Authentic, and Life-giving.
These four qualities describe how Christ interacted with His world and how His Church should reflect Him in ours.

Matthew 5:16 (NIV) – “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

1. R – Relevant: Speaking to the World We Live In

a) Understanding the Times

Relevance means knowing our culture and needs so we can communicate Christ effectively.

1 Chronicles 12:32 – “The men of Issachar… understood the times and knew what Israel should do.”

We must interpret Scripture faithfully and apply it wisely to our community’s realities — social issues, families, workplaces, and struggles.

b) Jesus Was Always Relevant

Jesus met people where they were — in fields, boats, homes, and marketplaces — using language and stories they understood.

Luke 5:3–4 – “He got into one of the boats… and taught the people from the boat.”

Relevance is not compromise; it’s communication.
We don’t water down the Gospel — we translate it into the language of everyday life.

c) Living Relevant Faith

To be relevant:

  • Listen to your community before you speak.
  • Use your gifts to meet real needs.
  • Let the message of Christ touch practical issues — fear, loneliness, family, and identity.

Colossians 4:5–6 – “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt…”

2. E – Engaging: Building Bridges, Not Walls

a) Jesus Engaged People Personally

He never stayed distant; He entered people’s stories.

John 4:7–10 – Jesus begins a conversation with the Samaritan woman, breaking social barriers and leading her to living water.

Engagement requires empathy, not argument.
Jesus asked questions, listened, and responded with truth wrapped in love.

b) The Church Should Be Approachable

People are drawn to those who are genuinely interested in them.
Paul said:

1 Corinthians 9:22–23 – “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.”

To be engaging means:

  • Being present where people are (community events, schools, workplaces).
  • Being approachable in tone and spirit.
  • Making room for conversation, not condemnation.

c) Engaging Through Good Works

Good deeds open hearts for the Good News.

Titus 3:8 – “Those who have trusted in God should be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

3. A – Authentic: Living What We Believe

a) Integrity Over Image

The world is tired of hypocrisy. Authenticity draws people because it’s rare.

Romans 12:9 – “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.”

Authenticity doesn’t mean perfection — it means honesty about our journey, struggles, and faith in Christ’s grace.

b) Jesus Modelled Authenticity

He didn’t hide His emotions — He wept, rejoiced, and spoke truth plainly.

John 11:35 – “Jesus wept.”
Matthew 23:27 – He exposed religious hypocrisy with courage.

c) Be the Same Inside and Out

Authentic believers:

  • Live the same faith publicly and privately.
  • Admit weakness and rely on God’s strength.
  • Inspire trust through consistency.

2 Corinthians 8:21 – “For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.”

Authenticity is evangelism through credibility.

4. L – Life-Giving: Sharing the Life of Christ

a) Jesus Came to Give Life

John 10:10 – “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.”

Life-giving Christians breathe hope into weary hearts.
We bring joy, peace, and encouragement because the Holy Spirit within us is the Spirit of life (Romans 8:11).

b) Speaking Life, Not Death

Our words can either wound or heal.

Proverbs 18:21 – “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Be life-giving in how you speak:

  • Encourage others.
  • Pray blessing, not criticism.
  • Speak truth that uplifts.

c) Serving as Life-Givers in Community

We give life when we serve — feeding the hungry, comforting the broken, mentoring youth, and helping the hurting.

Matthew 25:35–36 – “For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink…”

Our service makes Christ visible in practical love.

Conclusion – Being R.E.A.L. Reflects Jesus

To be R.E.A.L. is to reflect Christ Himself:

  • Relevant – He spoke to human need.
  • Engaging – He drew near to the outcast.
  • Authentic – He lived truthfully and humbly.
  • Life-giving – He gave His life so others might live.

When the Church is R.E.A.L., the community sees Jesus — not religion, not judgement, but hope.

Philippians 2:15–16 – “Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.”
