Becoming a Christian

Theme Verse:

2 Corinthians 5:17 — “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

SERMON 1: WHO Becomes a Christian? – The Call to All

Main Text: John 3:16–18; Romans 3:23; Revelation 22:17

1. The Universal Need

  • All have sinned (Romans 3:23).
  • No one is excluded from the call — “whosoever believes” (John 3:16).

2. The Individual Response

  • God calls personally by name (Isaiah 43:1).
  • Becoming a Christian begins with hearing and responding to that call (John 10:27).

3. The Divine Choice

  • God desires all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:3–4).
  • Yet each person must personally choose Christ (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Key Thought:

No one is beyond God’s reach; the invitation is for everyone, but the response must be personal.

SERMON 2: WHAT Does It Mean to Be a Christian? – A New Identity

Main Text: Ephesians 1:3–14; Colossians 3:1–10

1. A New Creation

  • Born again by the Spirit (John 3:3–6).
  • Old nature put off, new nature put on (Colossians 3:9–10).

2. A New Family

  • Adopted as children of God (Romans 8:15–17).
  • Belonging to the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12–13).

3. A New Purpose

  • To glorify God and serve others (1 Peter 4:10–11).

Key Thought:

Being Christian isn’t about joining a religion but receiving a new identity and belonging to a new family.

SERMON 3: WHEN Does the Change Occur? – The Moment of Salvation

Main Text: Acts 2:37–41; Romans 10:9–10

1. The Moment of Faith

  • Confession and belief mark the turning point (Romans 10:9).
  • Instant justification — declared righteous (Romans 5:1).

2. The Process of Growth

  • Salvation begins instantly but matures over time (Philippians 1:6).
  • Sanctification is ongoing (1 Thessalonians 4:3).

3. The Evidence of Change

  • Changed attitudes, actions, and affections (Galatians 5:22–23).

Key Thought:

Salvation happens in a moment, but transformation continues for a lifetime.

SERMON 4: WHERE Does It Happen? – From the Inside Out

Main Text: Ezekiel 36:26–27; John 4:19–24

1. The Heart: The Place of Change

  • God gives a new heart and spirit (Ezekiel 36:26).
  • The inward work of grace produces outward fruit (Matthew 7:17).

2. The Church: The Place of Growth

  • Growth happens in community (Acts 2:42–47).
  • Accountability, worship, and encouragement strengthen faith (Hebrews 10:24–25).

3. The World: The Place of Witness

  • The believer’s life becomes a testimony (Matthew 5:14–16).

Key Thought:

The Christian life begins in the heart, grows in the Church, and shines in the world.

SERMON 5: WHY Do People Become Christians? – The Motive Behind the Move

Main Text: John 14:6; Romans 6:23; 1 John 4:9–10

1. Because of God’s Love

  • God’s love draws us to repentance (Romans 2:4).

2. Because of the Need for Forgiveness

  • Sin separates, Christ reconciles (2 Corinthians 5:18–19).

3. Because of the Hope of Eternal Life

  • Only in Christ is true life found (John 10:10; John 14:6).

Key Thought:

The gospel is not about escape from hell, but entry into life — motivated by love, not fear.

SERMON 6: HOW Does a Person Become a Christian? – The Way of Salvation

Main Text: Acts 16:30–34; Ephesians 2:8–9

1. By Grace Through Faith

  • Not earned or deserved (Ephesians 2:8–9).
  • Faith is trusting what Christ has done (Romans 3:24–26).

2. Through Repentance and Confession

  • Turning from sin to God (Acts 3:19).
  • Confessing Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9).

3. Through Obedience and Baptism

  • Baptism symbolises death and resurrection (Romans 6:3–4).
  • The first step of obedience (Matthew 28:19).

Key Thought:

Becoming a Christian is simple but life-changing — grace received, sin renounced, and Christ embraced.

Series Summary Verse:

Titus 3:5–7 — “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy… so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”
