Introduction – The Mirror of God’s Word
There are three laws in God’s Word that deeply concern me. I hope they’ll concern you too.
These laws are for everyone, but today I want you to apply them personally — not to your neighbour, your spouse, or your friend.
We all struggle with what I call “the transference of truth.”
That’s when we hear a good sermon or read a challenging verse and instantly think of someone else who “really needs to hear this.”
But today, I want you to look in the mirror of God’s Word and ask: “What is this saying to me?”
1. Whatever You Obey Becomes Your Master
Scripture:
“Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.”
— Romans 6:16 (NLT)
Explanation
Paul teaches that obedience is never neutral — it always leads to servitude.
Whatever you choose to obey becomes your master — for good or for evil.
Ask yourself honestly:
- What have I chosen to obey?
- What influences my decisions, my thoughts, and my habits?
It could be something obviously sinful — pride, lust, greed —
or something more subtle — entertainment, comfort, family pressure, or social approval.
Whatever it is, if it dictates your choices, it’s your master.
Application
This law works both ways.
If you obey righteousness, righteousness rules you.
If you obey sin, sin rules you.
So the same law that may be causing your bondage is also the law that can bring your freedom — by choosing a different master.
2. Whatever Controls You Enslaves You
Scripture:
“They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you.”
— 2 Peter 2:19 (NLT)
Explanation
Peter builds on Paul’s truth — what begins as obedience soon becomes control.
At first you choose it, but over time it begins to choose you.
That habit, that thought pattern, that relationship — whatever you repeatedly yield to — starts to enslave you.
This is why your first choices matter so much.
If you continually choose what is ungodly, it will eventually rule you.
But if you continually choose God, His Spirit will guide, control, and empower you.
Summary of the First Two Laws
- Law 1: What I choose to obey becomes my master.
- Law 2: What controls me enslaves me.
So the question becomes: Who do I want as my master?
Paul answers in Romans 6:22:
“Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.”
To be enslaved to God is to be truly free.
3. You Can Only Serve One Master
Scripture:
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”
— Matthew 6:24 (NLT)
Explanation
Jesus makes it clear — divided loyalty is impossible.
You can serve only one master.
The issue might be God or money (as in this verse), or God or the world (James 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17).
But the truth stands: you can’t love both.
“The Spirit whom God has caused to live in us jealously longs for us.”
— James 4:5 (CEV)
The Holy Spirit yearns for our undivided affection.
When we try to serve two masters, our emotions become divided — love for one breeds contempt for the other.
So God, in mercy, says, “Choose one — and choose Me.”
Why Only One?
Because God doesn’t share thrones.
If you try to serve both, your heart will tear in two.
Jesus saves us from this confusion by saying, “Serve Me alone.”
In doing so, He frees us from the exhausting tug-of-war between worldliness and worship.
Conclusion – Changing Camps
So, if today you find that you’ve been serving someone or something other than God —
stop.
Be still before Him.
Pray and ask:
“Lord, what must I do to change camps — to come back under Your lordship?”
He will answer if you are willing to listen.
He wants your full affection, your whole heart, and your complete obedience.
The same law that enslaved you can also set you free — when you choose the right Master.
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36 (NLT)
Closing Challenge
- Who is your master today?
- What truly controls you?
- Are you trying to serve two masters?
Make the decision — right now — to serve God and Him alone.
Choose obedience that leads to freedom.
Then you’ll find not just courage, but peace, joy, and victory in your walk with Christ.
